Finding Caselaw in Westlaw and Lexis+ Online
This webinar is designed for paralegals and law school students in the College of Law and Public Services.
The learning objectives for this webinar include identifying how to find:
1. Finding case law via
a. Case Citation.
b. Party names.
c. Legal Digest System.
d. Secondary sources.
2. Reading a case.
3. Determining if a case is still "good law".
4. Shepardizing a case.
This 30-minute session will demonstrate effective search strategies to find case law on a specific legal issue, and how to narrow your results by jurisdiction, topic, and court level. You will also learn how to effectively use KeyCite and Shepard's to ensure that your cases are still good law.
The legal scenario that I will use to demonstrate the above techniques will be any one of the following:
1. Battery and Assault
2. Freedom of Speech
3. Encroaching boundaries
4. Dog bite
Upon completion of this webinar, you will understand how to effectively research case law.
